The Sony FX5 is the latest addition to Sony's Cinema Line, and we've already placed our order. It won't replace the cameras we already trust – instead, it fills an important role in our productions.
One of the main reasons for choosing the FX5 is to pair it with our existing Sony FX6. Both cameras use the same E-mount lenses, making it quick to move between tripod, handheld and gimbal setups without changing our lens selection. It also means both cameras can travel together in the same kit bag, creating a lightweight but capable production package for shoots across the UK.
A Camera for Gimbal Work
The FX6 is one of our favourite cameras for interviews, documentaries and commercial productions, but it's not always the most practical choice when a lightweight stabilised setup is needed.
The smaller FX5 should be ideal for gimbal work, allowing us to capture smooth tracking shots while matching the look of the FX6. Using two Cinema Line cameras together also simplifies colour matching during editing.
Why We Still Love Panasonic Lumix
We're not replacing our Panasonic equipment.
Our Lumix S1 II has become one of our favourite hybrid cameras. It's capable of producing excellent video while also capturing high-quality still photographs, making it an excellent choice when a project requires both. The compact Lumix system is often our first choice when travelling light or working where flexibility is important.
Different productions call for different tools, and we're fortunate to have both systems available.
Why Sony?
Sony's autofocus continues to be one of the biggest reasons we invest in the Cinema Line.
When filming on a gimbal, following people through busy environments or working with very shallow depth of field, reliable autofocus lets us concentrate on camera movement and composition rather than constantly checking focus.
Sony cameras also have an excellent reputation for low-light performance. Whether filming inside factories, warehouses, offices or event venues, that extra sensitivity helps us maintain image quality without introducing excessive noise or relying on additional lighting.
The Right Camera for the Job
Every production is different. Sometimes the best choice is a compact Lumix hybrid camera. Other times it's the Sony FX6, or soon, the FX5 working alongside it.
Our aim isn't to own cameras for the sake of it—it's to choose equipment that makes productions more efficient while delivering the best possible results for our clients.
