THE FLIGHT PLAN IS PART OF THE FILM PLAN
Before travelling, we look at what the camera needs to achieve and what the location will allow. That means reviewing controlled airspace, take-off access, public presence, built obstacles, required permissions, ongoing site work, forecast conditions and any restrictions that could change the shot list.
The aircraft, route and timing are then chosen around the actual environment. Light direction and background can matter just as much as altitude, particularly when the footage has to cut cleanly with ground cameras.
If a requested move is not sensible or compliant at that site, it is better to redesign the shot before the filming day than discover the problem with a crew already waiting.

A wide shot should establish something the ground footage cannot: geography, scale, access, movement, relationships between spaces or the shape of a site.

Progress coverage becomes far more useful when each visit can be compared with what came before. Where the site and flight plan allow it, we record reference viewpoints, heights and directions during the first shoot to give later visits a consistent visual starting point.

DRONE FILMING FAQ
What usually needs resolving before take-off
Commercial drone work depends on the location as much as the camera. These are the practical points we normally settle before confirming how the aerial coverage will work.
Can you fly at every location?
No. Airspace, restrictions, nearby people, structures, land access and the proposed operating area all affect whether a flight is appropriate. We assess the actual location before treating a shot as achievable.
What do you check before a shoot?
We review the address or map pin, airspace, access, permissions, surrounding obstacles, likely public activity, site rules, weather exposure and the shots the finished production needs.
What happens if the weather turns?
Strong wind, rain, poor visibility or unsuitable light can rule out the intended aerial sequence. Where possible we use a workable weather window or rearrange the aerial element rather than force a bad flight.
How much notice is useful?
More notice gives more room for location checks, permissions and weather planning, especially on complex commercial sites. Straightforward jobs may be possible at shorter notice when the operating environment allows it.
Can you work with our existing film crew?
Yes. We can provide aerial coverage as a specialist part of another production, coordinate with the director or camera team and capture shots to the technical requirements of their edit.
Can we receive the original files?
Yes. Source footage can be supplied in the agreed resolution and frame rate, with a sensible folder structure so an in-house or agency editor can pick it up easily.
Can repeat visits match earlier viewpoints?
Where the location permits, we can record reference positions and directions on the first visit to make later construction or development footage easier to compare. Each return flight is still reassessed for current conditions.
Can you combine drone and ground filming?
Yes. MJ Films can handle drone shots alongside interviews, general b-roll, gimbal work, event coverage and editing, giving the project one joined-up production workflow.
What should we send when enquiring?
Send the location, preferred date or date range, what needs to be shown, where the footage will be used and whether you need original clips or a finished edit. Any site contacts, access notes or known restrictions are useful too.
