Video production in Oxfordshire

In our experience, a carefully planned four-hour shoot can cover a surprising amount. It works best when contributors, rooms, access and the filming order are ready before we arrive. For a formal sit-down interview, we normally allow at least an hour before filming for camera position, lighting, sound and background setup. Several interviews, multiple setups or substantial B-roll are usually better suited to a full day.

Start with a simple brief rather than worrying about cameras or technical details. Tell us who the video is for, what you want it to achieve, who might appear in it, where you want to film and when you need the finished content. From there we can recommend the filming approach, crew size and whether you need one finished film or several pieces of content from the same shoot.

The smoother the preparation, the more useful material we can capture. Ideally we need confirmed contributors, access to the filming spaces, realistic interview timings and an idea of the activity or B-roll you want to show. For Oxford University shoots, we have been given permission to park on site when this has been arranged in advance. That is extremely useful because it means the full camera, lighting, audio and support kit can reach the location without wasting production time carrying equipment from a distant public car park.

The camera package is chosen around the job. For most Oxford productions we bring cinema cameras, professional lenses, radio and shotgun microphones, LED lighting, tripods and monitoring. In small university or office rooms, a wide-angle lens can be essential simply to create enough working distance, while a gimbal is useful for quick moving shots through corridors, offices and activity areas. The package is scaled to the brief, from a compact interview setup to multi-camera event coverage. Drone filming can also be added where permissions, airspace and weather allow.

For a panel discussion we normally start with a minimum of two cameras rather than relying on a single locked-off angle. That allows us to maintain a safe wide shot while getting tighter coverage of individual speakers and reactions. We bring two or more cameras, tripods and appropriate audio equipment, and where possible take a clean feed from the venue PA system. Depending on the event, additional microphones or recording backups can be used so every speaker is captured clearly.

Usually, you only pay for the crew the job actually needs. A straightforward interview, case study or business film can often be handled by one experienced self-shooting filmmaker, covering directing, camera, sound and a compact lighting setup.

If the production needs more coverage, we scale the crew from there. That might mean adding a second camera operator for multiple angles, a dedicated sound recordist for more demanding audio, extra lighting support, a drone operator or additional production crew.

The idea is to keep the crew proportionate to the brief, so you are not automatically paying for three or four people when one experienced operator can cover the job properly.
