INTERVIEW PLANNING BUILD FOR THE EDIT

Plan the interview around the edit you actually need

Start with the finished purpose

A leadership message, case study, documentary sequence and recruitment film all need different kinds of answers. We establish where the interview will appear and what viewers need to understand before shaping the questions.

Make answers work without the question

Where the interviewer will disappear from the finished film, we encourage self-contained answers that still make sense after the question is removed. That gives the editor far more freedom to shorten and rearrange material cleanly.

Decide who should cover each point

With several contributors, there is usually no benefit in asking everybody the same list. We can divide subjects between people so each contributor speaks from genuine experience and the final edit contains less repetition.

Plan short clips at the same time

If individual answers may later become social clips, staff messages or website content, we can deliberately record concise versions as well as the fuller conversation rather than trying to manufacture them afterwards.

Let the answers guide the supporting shots

When the interview is part of a wider film, the conversation helps identify the b-roll worth capturing: people, processes, products, locations or details that directly illustrate what the contributor is talking about.

One interview session can produce much more than one edit

Plan the outputs before filming and the same conversation can provide a useful bank of material for different audiences and channels.

Build the main story

Use the strongest answers from the full conversation to shape a case study, leadership film, recruitment piece or documentary sequence.

Create standalone answers

Record concise self-contained responses that can become individual website, social or internal communication clips without relying on the longer film.

Serve different audiences

A longer customer-facing story and shorter staff, recruitment or stakeholder versions can often come from the same shoot when those uses are identified beforehand.

Keep useful material for later

Well-organised interview selects and supporting footage can remain valuable after the first film, particularly for ongoing campaigns and multi-location content.

Interview Filming Across Every Sector

MJ Films provides specialist interview filming for corporate, public-sector, documentary and feature-film productions.

We have filmed politicians, business leaders, healthcare professionals, patients, engineers, tradespeople, IT specialists and members of the public. Our production experience also includes interviewing recognised actors on set and inside production trailers for feature-film EPK content, alongside assignments involving senior political figures.

Our calm, production-ready approach works equally well with experienced contributors and people appearing on camera for the first time. Every interview is carefully prepared, professionally lit and recorded with clear, broadcast-quality sound.

Available as a stand-alone video interview unit or embedded within a wider production, we can support corporate films, documentaries, case studies, testimonials, recruitment campaigns, public-sector communications and behind-the-scenes content.

Specialist crew. Rapid-response capability. Confident contributors. Production-ready results.

PREPARATION

Natural delivery starts with a useful framework

We establish the audience, purpose and key points before filming, including who will appear, how long the answers should be and whether contributors will speak to an interviewer or directly to camera. We also consider whether the footage is intended for one finished film, several individual edits or shorter versions for websites and social media.

Nine times out of ten, we work alongside the organisation’s marketing manager or project lead, who asks the questions while we concentrate on the cameras, lighting, sound and contributor performance. This often works well because they already understand the subject, the organisation and the answers required.

On other projects, the questions are supplied in advance—sometimes only the day before filming. We review them for clarity, length and repetition, then arrange them in an order that helps the contributor settle into the conversation. During filming, we may suggest a follow-up question or ask for a shorter, self-contained version of an answer so it still makes sense when the question is removed from the edit.

Some contributors work best from prompts and a natural conversation, while others prefer a script, autocue or carefully ordered questions. Where several people are being interviewed, we can plan who should cover each subject rather than asking everyone to repeat the same points.

Supporting footage is considered alongside the questions so relevant shots of the workplace, products, processes or people can illustrate what is being discussed. This gives the final edit useful visual context and prevents it from becoming a continuous sequence of talking heads.

Flexible Interview Filming Kit

The equipment we bring is matched to the location, access and scale of the production. Where parking or access is difficult, we can work with a compact backpack-based camera kit using professional mirrorless cameras, fast lenses, radio microphones and lightweight support without compromising the finished result.

Where access allows, we can bring a larger production package including the Sony FX6, additional cameras and lenses, professional lighting, boom microphones, radio mics, client monitors and full-size support equipment. Optional equipment can also include a camera slider for controlled movement and an autocue for scripted interviews and presentations.

This flexible approach means the production can remain practical in restricted locations while scaling up considerably when the space, access and brief justify it.

ON LOCATION

We can film anywhere

Interviews can be filmed in offices, factories, hospitals, venues, homes or temporary event spaces. Before setting up, we assess the background, available room, noise levels, power, access and the time available with each contributor. The camera, lighting and sound package is then matched to the location rather than forcing the same setup into every space.

Where useful, a second camera provides a choice of framing and helps shortened answers flow more naturally in the edit. Additional lighting can be used for a more controlled sit-down interview, while a compact setup may be better for brief statements or filming in busy working environments.

Many projects also include interview and b-roll filming, combining the spoken material with relevant footage of the workplace, products, processes or people being discussed. This gives the editor useful pictures to support each answer and helps turn a series of interviews into a more complete film.

HOW IT WORKS

A calm, well-organised interview process

1. Plan the interview

Agree the audience, message, contributors and intended final versions.

2. Prepare contributors

Share themes or questions and decide whether prompts, a script or autocue will help.

3. Film on location

Set the background, lighting, camera positions and microphones around the location.

4. Capture supporting b-roll

Film workplace detail, interactions, demonstrations or event coverage to support the answers.  More about b-roll

5. Edit the story

Select the strongest answers, remove repetition and build a clear narrative.

6. Deliver versions

Add captions, names, logos, music and the formats required for each channel.

How to Prepare for a Professional Interview Shoot

1

Choose the location

(Scout the space before filming)

Choose the Right Background

Decide whether you want a clean paper backdrop, curtain, office setting or a more natural environment with lamps and plants. Simple, uncluttered backgrounds usually work best.

Use the Largest Quiet Room Available

A spacious room gives us room to position the camera, lights and interviewer properly, while placing the contributor further from the background to create stronger depth and separation.

Small meeting rooms can severely restrict the setup and may require compromises with lighting, framing and camera position.

Consider Another Venue

If your office does not have a suitable room, consider hiring a studio, hotel meeting room or community hall. Space and privacy are usually more valuable than elaborate decoration.

Allow Time for Setup

For a carefully lit documentary-style interview, allow around one to two hours for camera, lighting and sound preparation.

A basic setup can be completed quickly with a small LED light and lavalier microphone, but it will not produce the same depth, lighting control or visual finish.

2

Prepare the contributors

(Help everyone feel comfortable and ready)

Brief the Contributors

  • Explain the purpose of the interview in advance.
  • Share the discussion topics so contributors know what to expect.
  • Encourage natural conversation rather than memorising answers.
  • Avoid clothing with busy patterns, fine stripes or large logos.
  • Reassure contributors that questions can be repeated and mistakes edited out.
  • Allow a few minutes to settle before filming.
  • Hair and make-up professionals can be arranged where required for executive interviews, campaign films and larger productions.

Plan the Questions

  • Decide what message the interview should communicate.
  • Use open questions beginning with how, what and why.
  • Avoid questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no".
  • Keep questions concise and conversational.
  • Arrange questions in a logical order.
  • Think about which answers can be illustrated with supporting B-roll.

Interview Video Packages

How much does interview filming cost in UK?

Interview filming typically starts from £895, covering a professionally lit and recorded interview shoot with two cameras. A fuller production including supporting B-roll and a finished edit usually starts from £1,300 plus travel.

Larger productions can cost several thousand pounds where the brief requires a full crew, extensive lighting, specialist sound, studio hire, hair and make-up, multiple contributors or cinema cameras such as the Sony VENICE.

The final cost depends on the number of contributors, filming locations, travel, production time, crew size, equipment and the amount of editing required. The guide below reflects the majority of interview productions we undertake, with every project quoted individually before filming begins.

Interview video FAQs

How long does it take to film an interview?

A carefully lit interview normally requires 60–120 minutes for setup, depending on the room, number of cameras and intended visual style. Filming time is then scheduled around the contributor and length of the interview.

Do you provide an autocue?

Yes. Autocue is useful for precise scripted messages. For case studies and documentary interviews, guided questions often produce a more natural result.

Can you include b-roll?

Yes. Most interview projects also include b-roll showing the workplace, people, products or processes being discussed. We can plan both elements within the same shoot, giving the editor relevant footage to illustrate answers and cover shortened sections naturally.

See our interview and b-roll filming service for package options and footage delivery.

What if the contributor is nervous?

We keep the set calm, explain the process and begin with easy conversational questions. Answers can be repeated and the strongest parts selected in the edit.

Can you film several interviews in one day?

Yes, when contributors, rooms and access are organised. We can keep one set in place or move between departments and locations where the schedule allows.

How many cameras to film an interview?

We usually recommend two cameras. The main camera records the contributor in a medium close-up, while the second is positioned at a different angle for a tighter or wider view. This gives the edit more visual variety and allows answers to be shortened cleanly without obvious jump cuts.

Lens choice depends on the room and desired look, but interviews are commonly filmed with focal lengths around 35, 50mm and 85mm for natural perspective and background separation. Both cameras are positioned on the same side of the contributor’s eyeline so the angles cut together naturally.

A third camera may be used for panel discussions or interviews involving both a contributor and interviewer, providing a continuous wide shot that keeps them together within the setting.
