Plan the concert before the house lights go down
Concert filming is different from a normal event shoot because the important moments cannot be repeated for the camera. We plan around the programme, stage layout, venue sightlines, sound sources and the final videos you need, then position the cameras so the performance can run without the production getting in the way.
Start with the programme and stage layout
We ask for the running order, ensemble size, stage plan and any important solos, introductions, intervals or presentation moments. That tells us where continuous coverage is essential and where a camera can concentrate on detail.
Keep a continuous safety angle
A locked wide shot protects the complete performance while operated cameras look for conductors, soloists, sections, hands, faces and other detail. That gives the edit freedom without risking a gap in the concert.
Use rehearsal or soundcheck when available
Access before the audience arrives is useful for checking sightlines, exposure, sound feeds and any camera position that needs adjustment. It also helps us identify visual moments that will matter during the performance.
Plan the sound before the first note
Where possible we take a direct feed from the venue sound desk and record additional stage or audience microphones for atmosphere, backup and flexibility in the edit.
Protect the audience experience
Tripods, operators and cables are positioned around sightlines and venue rules. Long lenses, locked cameras and discreet positions allow close coverage without placing the crew in front of the audience.

A straightforward option built around continuous coverage. Typically two fixed cameras are positioned to protect the whole performance, with clean audio recorded for a dependable full-length concert film.

Add operated close-ups and extra viewpoints so the edit can move between the conductor, soloists, instrumental sections, choir and full ensemble while a wide angle keeps the performance continuously covered.

This example shows the core approach: preserve the full stage and complete performance while giving the edit enough closer material to follow musicians, sections and the conductor.
The exact number of cameras is decided by the stage layout, audience sightlines and the level of detail required. For smaller productions that can mean a compact setup; larger concerts can add operated cameras and additional viewpoints.

The charity concert shown here was filmed at the Dora Stoutzker Hall in Cardiff. Alongside preserving the event, the footage was shaped into a shorter promotional film that could keep working after the performance itself.
That is often the most useful way to approach concert filming: plan the full-length record and the promotional material together, so the same night can supply a concert archive, future-event marketing and shorter social content.
Rehearsal footage, organiser or musician interviews and audience reaction can be added when the schedule allows.

Sound is planned as part of the filming setup
A concert film can look excellent and still fail if the sound is thin, distorted or disconnected from the room. Before the performance we establish what the venue or audio team can supply and what independent recording is sensible.
Where available, we take a clean feed from the venue sound desk. Additional microphones can be positioned on or near the stage and in the audience area to retain atmosphere and provide another source for the edit.
For productions with a dedicated recording engineer or externally supplied multitrack audio, we can sync the professionally mixed master to the multi-camera picture in post-production.

HOW MANY CAMERAS?
Enough angles to follow the music — without filling the venue with kit
The camera plan is built around the ensemble and the room. More cameras are useful only when they give the edit a genuinely different view of the performance.
2 cameras — dependable record
A practical choice for choirs, community ensembles and smaller performances: continuous wide coverage plus a second viewpoint, with the emphasis on preserving the complete concert cleanly.
3–4 cameras — fuller concert film
Adds more useful visual choice for soloists, conductor, instrumental groups and stage detail. One or more operated positions can follow the musical action while fixed angles protect the performance.
5–6+ cameras — larger production
Suitable where the ensemble, venue and budget justify broader coverage. High, side, conductor-facing or additional operated positions can be added without giving up the continuous safety view.

Need the concert streamed as well as recorded?
Concert filming can be combined with a live stream where the venue, connectivity and production requirements make that appropriate. Cameras, venue sound, graphics, monitoring and the viewing destination are planned as one system.
The stream does not replace the local recording. We retain clean recordings for the final concert film and any post-event promotional edits, so the finished material is not limited to what went out live.

How much does concert filming cost?
The quote depends mainly on camera count, number of operators, concert length, rehearsal access, audio requirements, edit length, turnaround and travel. Once the venue, programme and deliverables are clear, we recommend the smallest setup that will cover the performance properly.
What does the simplest concert recording include?
A straightforward option can use two fixed cameras positioned to preserve the whole performance, with clean audio captured for a full-length edited recording. It suits performances where dependable documentation matters more than constant close-up coverage.
How many cameras do you recommend?
Two cameras can be enough for a simple record. Three or four provide much more freedom for soloists, conductor and sectional detail. Five, six or more can be useful for a larger ensemble or a production that needs a more varied concert film.
Can you record audio from the venue sound desk?
Yes, where the venue can provide a suitable feed. We can also record additional stage or audience microphones for atmosphere, backup and flexibility in post-production.
Can you use a professionally mixed audio master?
Yes. If a dedicated audio engineer or venue supplies a finished mix or multitrack-derived master, we can sync that recording to the multi-camera picture for the final concert film.
Will the cameras block the audience?
Camera positions are planned around sightlines, aisles and venue rules. Long lenses, fixed cameras and discreet operating positions help us capture close detail without placing equipment in front of the audience.
Can you film rehearsals and behind the scenes as well?
Yes. Rehearsal, soundcheck, backstage preparation, venue detail and short interviews can be added when the schedule allows, particularly when the finished package also needs promotional content.
Can you produce individual pieces as separate videos?
Yes. A full concert can be delivered as one programme, split into individual works or songs, or supplied both ways. Titles, credits and other agreed information can be added in post-production.
Can the concert be live streamed?
Yes, where the venue, connectivity and production plan are suitable. We can combine the multi-camera recording with live streaming and retain local recordings for the final edit.
How quickly can the finished videos be delivered?
Turnaround depends on concert length and the number of outputs. If a trailer, short clip or priority edit is time-sensitive, tell us before the event so it can be scheduled ahead of the longer concert edit.
